Admit it, you laugh when you read the word “fartlek”.

I don’t, because I am a professional running coach.

Who am I kidding? FARTlek! HAHAHA!

“What is a fartlek?” you ask?

Fartlek, which means “speed play” in Swedish, is a training method that blends continuous training with interval training. Fartlek runs are a very simple form of a long distance run. Fartlek training “is simply defined as periods of fast running intermixed with periods of slower running.”

So for your next run, change the pace up throughout. For example, do an easy mile, followed by a mile at a slightly harder pace, a half mile at your 5k pace, then a mile at easy pace. Feel free to adjust to your liking.
